Raytheon logo_EbizRaytheon has been directed to restart production work on new defense radar systems for the U.S. Navy under a potential $1.6 billion contract.

The company will continue to develop, integrate and test the Air and Missile Defense S-Band Radar and radar suite controller that is being built for the Arleigh Burke class destroyers, Raytheon said Monday.

AMDR is built with an existing X-band radar technology for the ships covered under the contract, while Raytheon will also build low-rate initial production systems after the Milestone C in fiscal 2017.

MDA is obligating approximately $157 million in previously appropriated fiscal year 2013 funding at the time of award.
