BoozAllenLogoBooz Allen Hamilton took home the top prize in an Energy Department web and mobile application-making challenge, a peer-judged victory that Executive Vice President Michael Farber sees as an example of how the firm’s employees can collaborate with other entrepreneurs.

“Strategic minds with diverse skills exist inside and outside the firm. When we can pair the right skill sets in the right teams, we can create something powerful,” Farber said Thursday.

The winning group comprised of a five-man Booz Allen team from BAH — Mehdi Esmail, Lowell Usrey, Seif Kobrosly, Adil Kadir and Tom Gamon — as well as Leonadro Petry, Daniel Klothe and Carolyn Zelikow.

In DOE’s Apps for Energy II contest, the group created an iOS application called Black Sheep that works to measure the energy efficiency of housesin a neighborhood by using public data on electricity and gas consumption, as well as a real estate mapping software from Zillow to determine the scores.

The mobile app is designed to color-code each house as white, gray or black, depending on how high they score on the energy meter.

Booz Allen says the program will be refined until next month and then resubmitted for regional competition.

DOE’s four-part, year-long American Energy Data Challenge runs through October 2014.
