A subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies will build a launch vehicle stage adapter for NASA to use on the agency’s Space Launch System under a five-year, $60 million contract.

Teledyne Brown Engineering unit will use the Marshall Space Flight Center’s advanced welding facility to assemble the adapter, which is intended to protect and support SLS’ core and interim cryogenic propulsion system, Teledyne said Tuesday.

The SLS rocket will be used for science missions and space exploration to carry equipment and cargo with the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle.

“The Space Launch System is a centerpiece program for MSFC and a strategic capability for our nation,” said Robert Mehrabian, CEO of Teledyne Technologies.

Teledyne Brown has worked with the agency on space initiatives since the Apollo program, the company said.
