att-logoAT&T is planning to extend the range of its fiber-optic network to 21 large metropolitan areas across the U.S. in a move to help address growing customer demand for broadband services.

The U-verse with GigaPower service will be deployed in up to 100 cities and municipalities in order to provide 1-gigabit-per-second Internet access and television services to residents, AT&T said Monday.

The company aims to respond to the increasing needs for broadband, mobile and cloud services by modernizing its wireless and wireline networks.

Lori Lee, senior executive vice president at AT&T Home Solutions, said AT&T will work with communities that have network facilities, strong investment cases and receptive policies.

The fiber network has been deployed in Austin, Texas and nearby areas and is scheduled to rollout in Dallas this summer.

AT&T wants U-verse users to view and share large data files, store data in a cloud computing environment and conduct video conferences.
