Lockheed-Martin-BlueLockheed Martin will host summer fellowship for 26 California Bay-area teachers to celebrate the company’s 30-year partnership with the nonprofit organization Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education.

The eight-week IISME program will join middle school, high school and junior college teachers with a mentor for Lockheed who will work with the teachers in a STEM-related job assignment to give participants hands-on experiences they can share with students to heighten interest in math and science, Lockheed said Monday.

IISME Fellows focus on technical challenges related to satellite and missile advanced technologies under development in the company’s Sunnyvale and Palo Alto facilities.

“This summer, we will exceed 1.6 million students benefiting from our innovative program,” IISME Executive Director Brian Kaplan said.

More than 400 teachers have participated in the partnership program, Lockheed said.

Lockheed sponsors the IISME with the goal of helping math and science teachers enhance students’ science and engineering talents.

IISME was founded in 1985 by several companies that are present in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Lockheed Martin, in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California at Berkeley.
