TOW missileRaytheon and Thales have entered into a development and production agreement to update the former’s tube-launched, optically tracked, wireless-guided, anti-armor weapon system, with Thales investing $20.2 million for the endeavor.

Raytheon said Monday the collaboration will involve 27 months of design and development work and five years of production for two new missile subassemblies to boost system fuze safety.

“This development activity will enable increased safety compliance and warfighter survivability while addressing obsolescence issues and incorporating cost saving technologies,” added Michelle Lohmeier, vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems’ land warfare systems business.

According to Raytheon, it has sold at least 675,000 TOW missiles to more than 40 armed forces worldwide for NATO, United Nations, peacekeeping missions and other military operations.
