technology, cyber, cloud, computerIBM has partnered with Applied Communication Sciences and AT&T to develop a technology that aims to reduce the provisioning time for cloud computing systems from days to seconds.

The companies built the cloud-based architecture through a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency‘s CORONET program, IBM said Tuesday.

DARPA aims for the industry team to commercial the technology to help enterprises reconfigure multi-terabit networks in a short period of time.

“This technology not only represents a new ability to scale big data workloads and cloud computing resources in a single environment but the elastic bandwidth model removes the inefficiency in consumption versus cost for cloud-to-cloud connectivity,” said Douglas Freimuth, research senior technical staff member and master inventor at IBM.

AT&T designed the overall networking infrastructure by using IBM’s cloud and data center orchestration products.

ACS shared its expertise in optical layer routing, signaling and network management with the team members during the technology development process.

According to IBM, the platform was implemented on open-source cloud software OpenStack and worked to manage wireless area network connectivity as well as balance virtual workloads between two cloud networks.

“By delivering highly efficient bandwidth sharing, this technology will significantly reduce costs for both carriers and cloud providers,” said Matt Goodman, a DARPA program manager.
