space engineeringA Lockheed Martin team has completed its work to couple the large system and propulsion modules for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R series.

The A2100-based satellite’s system module comprises the command and data handling, communication and electrical power subsystems, Lockheed said Thursday.

Harris Corp. has also installed the initial weather product applications into GOES-R’s ground segment hardware, that company said.

The propulsion core is the structural backbone of the GOES-R satellite and the propulsion subsystem is built to help maneuver the satellite during on-orbit repositioning.

The GOES-R series program is set for functional and environmental testing phases in the fall after installation of the six weather and solar-monitoring instruments.

Scheduled for launch in 2016, the satellite will work to provide weather products to Western Hemisphere users.
