General Dynamics EbizGeneral Dynamics Canada has come under contract to update the Canadian military’s 11,000 combat net radios and 6,800 vehicle interface units for $109 million over a three-year period.

The upgrade will tweak each unit’s throughput and data transmission speeds, and allow warfighters to use the radio set’s voice, messaging and location reporting features at the same time, General Dynamics said Friday.

Rockwell Collins Canada, SigmaPoint Technologies and SED Systems will contribute hardware and software components in support of the project, it added.

David Ibbetson, vice president at General Dynamics C4 Systems International, expects the enhancements to add 10 more years to the lifecycle of the product, originally procured in 1991.
