research-and-development-RD3D Systems has landed two contracts worth more than $1 million to help the U.S. Air Force build three-dimensional printers for aerospace and defense technology manufacturing.

The Air Force Research Laboratory will finance both 3D printing projects while America Makes: National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute will manage the programs, 3DS said Tuesday.

Under the first contract, 3DS will work with the University of Delaware, Lockheed Martin and the Sandia National Laboratory to integrate predictive technology into 3DS-designed printers.

The second contract calls for the development of a platform intended to help A&D industry users produce metallic structures and manage the entire manufacturing process.

3DS, Honeywell International, Northrop Grumman and the Pennsylvania State University will collaborate on the direct metal printing system.
