American Systems celebrated Tuesday its 40th anniversary as an information technology products and services provider for the government and 25th year as an employee-owned company.

American Systems CEO Peter Smith, who came onboard in 1980, said the company has remained committed to its business and philanthropic missions throughout the years.

“Since becoming a majority-owned ESOP in 1997, our culture of employee ownership has allowed us to grow steadily while at the same time give back to the communities in which we live and operate,” said Smith, who assumed his current role in August 2014.

“Our 1,400 employee-owners are all in this together, and we have a collective dedication to our customers’ missions that will help ensure success for years to come. We know what’s at stake.”

The Chantilly, Virginia-based firm provides systems engineering, technical and managed services, and test and evaluation support to its clients in national security, readiness, C4ISR, acquisition and logistics, and citizen safety.

The $325 million government contractor has garnered citations on numerous categories such as the Companies as Responsive Employers Award, Small Business Partner of the Year and GSA Mentor of the Year, as well as inclusions to several listings such as the Wash100, the Top Innovators List and Federal 100 List.
