biofuelA Battelle team of scientists and engineers has demonstrated a method for producing transportation fuels from biomass through a project funded by the U.S. Energy Department.

Battelle said Wednesday its mobile catalytic pyrolysis system facilitated a more than 1,200-hour continuous hydrotreatment operation to produce biofuels.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory provided bio-oil stabilization catalysts for Battelle’s biomass converter and Marathon Petroleum Corp. helped assess the biofuel product.

The system is designed to process at least one ton of biomass a day.

Battelle also partnered with Equinox Chemicals to explore the potential of platform pyrolysis technology to manufacture biopolyols and biochemicals for multiple industrial applications.
