cablesMany federal agencies have embarked on programs to modernize their information technology networks due to a growing use of mobile devices in their organizations, Juniper Networks executive Brian Roach wrote in a GCN opinion piece published Thursday.

Roach, vice president of the federal business and managing director for worldwide government at Juniper, has proposed four strategies for federal IT modernization.

He said automation tools can help IT managers at the U.S. Defense Department and other agencies to have a better view of network users, devices and bottlenecks.

“Automation can immediately alert federal IT professionals to threats, allowing managers to react quickly and resulting in overall threat response improvements,” he stated.

He also recommended that agencies use an open approach when they modernize IT infrastructure in order to address agility and scalability issues.

Roach estimates that network modernization initiatives help organizations lower total cost of ownership by up to 30 percent.
