cybersecurityA new Verizon cybersecurity report has highlighted what the company describes as a continuing gap between the time a data breach occurs and when a company detects the cyber attack.

Mike Denning, vice president of global security for Verizon enterprise solutions, said Wednesday that the company continues “to see sizable gaps in how organizations defend themselves.”

The company’s 2015 Data Breach Investigations report indicates that a number of vulnerabilities that date back to as early as 2007 remain unpatched due to what Verizon says as lack of implementation of available security tools.

The report also reveals that 70 percent of cyber attacks combine phishing and hacking techniques that involve a secondary victim, Verizon says.

Verizon also examined how the Internet of Things technologies are exploited through the use of a network of compromised computers to launch denial-of-service attacks.

“While there is no guarantee against being breached, organizations can greatly manage their risk by becoming more vigilant in covering their bases,” Denning said.
