airport towerThales‘ in-flight entertainment and connectivity business and others in the aviation industry are eyeing broadband pipes for the transmission of non-safety Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System operational data, Runway Girl Network reported Thursday.

Seth Miller writes that the transfer of ACARS data over broadband could present a potential threat to the in-flight connectivity system’s security.

Dominique Giannoi, CEO of Thales InFlyt Experience, noted the company’s support for transmitting black box, airplane health, financial transactions and other operational data as well as non-safety ACARS data.

“Our vision is that in the future we will use the best pipe available to transfer data in a very secure way,” he said at the recent Aircraft Interiors Expo in Germany.

Miller reports that the industry also believes that the Iridium Communications and Inmarsat L-band connectivity channels should continue bolstering safety services.

Thales InFlyt Experience is also looking into options for packaging or bundling the in-flight connectivity systems, the report said.
