Frank Kendall – defense undersecretary of acquisition, technology and logistics – and Bill LaPlante — the Air Force‘s acquisition chief — have wrapped up a review for the branch’s Long Range Strike Bomber program, Breaking Defense reported Thursday.

“We looked at the design to make sure it’s at the level of maturity it’s supposed to be,” Kendall told Breaking Defense editor Colin Clark.

Northrop Grumman and a BoeingLockheed Martin team are competing to build up to 100 bombers for the Air Force and the branch plans to award a contract by air-force-tile-adthe summer’s end, according to Breaking Defense.

A subsequent report by Reuters published Friday said the Air Force has slated August to award the contract, which could be worth between $50 billion and $80 billion.
