The Concurrent Technologies Corp. Foundation has awarded cash prizes to the winners of the annual Great Americans Day Essay Contest for students around the Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

CTC said Tuesday the competition received more than two dozen essays about U.S. cowboy and actor Will Rogers, who was highlighted during the University of Pittsburgh’s Great Americans Day Citizenship Forum.

“Will Rogers may have found fame through his roping and acting ability, but he used his fame to bring awareness to the plight of the unemployed, the devastation of natural disasters and the effects of drought on the American farmer,” said CTC President and CEO Ed Sheehan.

Taylor Strong, an eleventh-grade student at Windber Area High School, won first place and Angie Meyers, a twelfth-grader at Windber Area High School, landed in second place.

The two students accepted their awards during a ceremony held Tuesday at CTC’s environmental technology facility in Johnstown.

CTC Chairman Howard M. Picking III and wife Adelle donated funds to the forum.
