Zalmai Azmi, formerly CIO at FBI, has joined management consulting firm IMTAS as president and chief operating officer.

“He has exceptional experience in law enforcement, security and intelligence and has an excellent background and senior level expertise in both the government and private sectors,” Ajay Bhatia, CEO and chairman of the board at IMTAS, said July 31.

He brings more than three decades of information technology, cybersecurity and national security experience to his role at the Virginia-based company.

Prior to joining IMTAS, Azmi spent two years as CEO of Nexus Solutions.

He served as a senior vice president at CACI International, where he helped set up that company’s cyber division and led federal IT, national security and law enforcement programs.

During his tenure at FBI, Azmi helped develop the bureau’s Sentinel case management and information system and a knowledge base platform designed to facilitate information sharing between law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

He previously worked at the Executive Office for the United States Attorneys as CIO and at the Patent and Trademark Office as an IT project manager.

The U.S. Marine Corps veteran has received numerous awards, including the President G.W. Bush Award for Excellence in Counterterrorism and the Presidential Rank of Distinguished Executive Award.
