T_38Raytheon wants to join Alenia Aermacchi and CAE in a bid for a contract to replace the U.S. Air Force‘s T-38 aircrew training systems, Defense News reported Thursday.

Aaron Mehta writes Raytheon and the Air Force have discussed about the company’s interest in pursuing the T-X trainer replacement program after General Dynamics left the Alenia partnership as a prime contractor.

Col. Philip Wielhouwer, chief of the capability requirements division at the U.S. Air Education and Training Command, was quoted as saying the military service invited Raytheon to attend a pre-solicitation conference around May.

Alenia proposed T-100, a variant of the Italian firm’s M-346 trainer aircraft, to the Air Force.

Wielhouwer and Brig. Gen. Andrew Croft – AETC director of plans, programs, requirements and assessments – said they expect the military branch to issue final solicitation in September 2016 and award a contract in fall 2017, the publication reports.
