Lockheed Martin BlueLockheed Martin‘s Australian arm plans to open a submarine combat system laboratory in Mawson Lakes as part of efforts to secure work for the Australian navy’s SEA 1000 Future Submarine Project.

The company said Friday construction on the facility’s first phase began in July and is scheduled to be complete by November.

“The lab is all about risk reduction,” said Raydon Gates, CEO of Lockheed’s business operations in Australia and New Zealand.

“It gives us the flexibility to work with the SEA 1000 hull designers and combat subsystem providers in every step of the process.”

Lockheed also plans to expand the laboratory after initial operations through the third quarter of 2016.

The facility will feature a reconfigurable submarine command center, computer processing technology with reconfigurable hardware as well as collaboration space, the company said.
