slide-rule-math-education-STEM-count-schoolThe U.S. Defense Department has chosen a Battelle-Purdue University alliance to evaluate and recommend strategies for U.S. Army-run science, technology, engineering and math education programs, The Purdue Exponent reported Wednesday.

Sarah Kennedy writes Purdue University received a $5.25 million grant to support the military branch’s Educational Outreach Program in collaboration with Battelle.

Louie Lopez, Army’s AEOP cooperative agreement manager, said the military service launched the initiative to encourage students’ interest in STEM subjects through contests, enrichment activities, apprenticeships and scholarships.

Carla Johnson, associate dean for research, engagement and global partnerships at Purdue University’s College of Education, said the university aims to help its students access internship and apprenticeship opportunities through the Army initiative.

The Army introduced 10 STEM educational efforts as part of the program, Johnson added.
