Black HawkThe U.S. Army is in the process of crafting an acquisition strategy for a program that seeks to develop platforms for helicopter pilots to see and operate in degraded visual environments, Breaking Defense reported Monday.

The service branch’s Brownout Rotorcraft Enhancement System program aims to mitigate deaths and aircraft losses caused by DVE, such as brownout and whiteout, Col. Mathew Hannah, project manager for the BORES program, said at an event hosted by the Association of the United States Army.

“DVE is a high priority for the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and for Army Aviation,” Hannah said.

Richard Whittle writes the Army will also assess existing sensor platforms against DVE onboard a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in order to identify technologies for further development.

Hannah said the evaluation will take place at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona in the spring of 2016.
