cybersecurityFortinet‘s security research division has released its annual list of cyber activity predictions to help other companies and government organizations prepare strategies against emerging malicious threats.

The “New Rules: The Evolving Threat Landscape in 2016” report predicts hackers will use software tools to exploit vulnerabilities or target communication protocols of Internet-connected devices, Fortinet said Tuesday.

FortiGuard Labs anticipates the emergence of worms and viruses designed to attack Internet of Things technology and believes cloud-based mobile applications can potentially create an attack vector for virtual networks.

Researchers cited a new malicious tool known as ghostware that works to remove threat indicators normally detected by current security platforms and makes it harder for organizations to monitor attacks.

Organizations could also see in the coming year a possible use of two-faced malware by hackers to evade sandboxing technologies in order to deliver malicious content, Fortinet added.
