DHS - ExecutiveMosaicThe Department of Homeland Security’s science and technology directorate plans to use a potential five-year, $20 million contract vehicle to encourage technology startups and small businesses to compete for government contracts.

DHS will award the first round of contracts to potential vendors that can provide security platforms for the Internet of Things, the department said Friday.

According to a FedBizOpps notice published Wednesday, other technical areas the Innovation OTS program will cover include cybersecurity, counterterrorism, aviation security, biological threat defense, support to first responders and unmanned aircraft systems security.

The contract vehicle contains four phases that will focus on prototype development that aims to address DHS requirements, further prototype development for viability demonstration, pilot testing and operational evaluation.

Companies can receive up to $200,000 in funds for each phase, which has a performance period of three to six months, according to the notice.
