droneCobham‘s satellite communications business has created the Aviator UAV 200, a 1.45 kg unmanned aerial vehicle satcom system that works to connect the drone to an Inmarsat network.

sUAS News reported Monday the unit works to support tactical UAV satellite connectivity with data transmission of up to 200 kbps with full control of data channels.

Cobham said it designed Aviator UAV 200 to be lightweight and compact and to link with Inmarsat Class 4 SwiftBroadband services.

Kim Gram, vice president for Cobham’s aeronautical business unit, said the satcom system aims to open up opportunities for several field applications.

Cobham added that Aviator UAV 200 can also be used for safety and security, commercial use and scientific research, aside from military applications.

“We have seen a global demand from military and government customers looking to increase the operational effectiveness of their TUAV platforms,” said Inmarsat Global Government President Andy Start.

“Enabling satcom on these small airframes really is a game change.”
