DigitalGlobeDigitalGlobe has deployed the company’s public crowd sourcing platform to Fiji in an effort to help the government assess damage that resulted from a cyclone that struck the country Feb. 20.

DigitalGlobe captured the first images of Cyclone Winston’s impact with its FirstLook service and the company’s high-resolution satellite constellation gathered the images within 24 hours of the landfall, the company said Monday.

“The pointing agility and broad area collection capacity of our satellites enabled us to quickly image many of the affected islands,” said Caitlyn Milton, DigitalGlobe’s crowdsourcing manager.

DigitalGlobe uploaded the satellite images onto the crowdsourcing-based Tomnod for volunteers to determine impassable roads, damaged buildings and other devastated areas.

The Fiji government continues to employ the Tomnod campaign until crowdsourcing work for the entire area of interest is complete.
