cybersecurityGalois has formed a new election technology company as part of an effort to help election officials secure and verify polls with open source software and systems.

The Free & Fair spinoff will provide voting technology that utilizes commercial off-the-shelf hardware and works to generate verifiable evidence of election results, Galois said Monday.

Joseph Kiniry, an elections technology adviser and research lead for verifiable elections at Galois, founded the spinoff and serves as its CEO.

“Most U.S. jurisdictions today use election technology developed in the 1990s, and the typical voting system is running an operating system that is no longer vendor-supported, does not have security patches regularly applied and relies on outdated technology,” he said.

Kiniry added that Free & Fair will work to deliver high-assurance, open source software and services that facilitate official control of the election system.

Free & Fair products include the Tabulator ballot scanning and tabulation system, ePollbook or electronic poll book and the Supervised Voting System polling place tool.
