Lockheed Martin BlueThe U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin a $40.8 million contract modification to provide engineering support for AN/SQQ-89A surface ship undersea warfare systems.

The Defense Department said Thursday the modification exercises a one-year option on a previously awarded contract for the development, integration and production of an  AN/SQQ-89A variant.

The system is designed to search, detect, classify, localize and track submarines, mine-like small objects and torpedo threats, DoD noted.

The Naval Sea Systems Command will obligate $35.7 million at the time of award of the modification and about $2.3 million in contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

The contract covers purchases from the Navy and government of Japan under the foreign military sales program.

AN/SQQ-89A consists of an underwater fire control technology, on board trainer capability and a display subsystem and is designed to integrate with the Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System.
