electricityA joint venture of Schneider Electric‘s U.S. subsidiary and infrastructure development company Black & Veatch has won a potential two-year, $21.9 million contract to design and build an energy security microgrid system for a San Diego-based U.S. Marine Corps air base.

The U.S. Navy asked Schneider Electric USA–Black & Veatch JV to construct a system that would power mission-critical and support facilities throughout Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in the event of an outage, the Defense Department said Tuesday.

DoD noted the microgrid will be designed to also manage electricity use at the base during peak times when the system is connected to a utility grid.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command-Southwest received four offers for the project via the Navy’s electronic commerce website and the service branch obligated $19.3 million in fiscal 2014 military construction and defense-wide contract funds at the time of award.

Schneider Electric USA–Black & Veatch JV is scheduled to finish contract work in July 2018.
