smiths detectionSmiths Detection has received a $40.9 million follow-on task order from the Department of Homeland Security to supply a handheld radiation detection and identification system to DHS’ Domestic Nuclear Detection Office.

The company said Tuesday it will provide its RadSeeker technology for department  personnel to detect, locate and identify the source of radiological materials.

“RadSeeker technology was developed in cooperation with DHS to meet specific requirements to help keep our country safe from the threat of nuclear and radiological proliferation,” said Rob Ledenko, Smiths Detection vice president of North America sales and business development.

The device is designed to distinguish concealed radiological and nuclear threats from natural or legitimate sources of radiation, according to the company.
