Scalable Space Inertial Reference UnitNorthrop Grumman will deliver a space inertial reference system for Germany’s satellite-based radar reconnaissance platform under a contract with Bremen, Germany-based space systems company OHB System AG.

Northrop said Monday its Scalable Space Inertial Reference Unit-L will work to provide sensor pointing or stabilization as well as attitude control support for Germany’s SARah satellite-based radar reconnaissance system.

Scalable SIRU-L is based on Northrop’s Scalable SIRU that is designed to provide attitude control support for commercial, government and civil space missions.

Scalable SIRU features Northrop’s hemispherical resonator gyro that has completed more than 35 million operating hours in space, the U.S. defense company noted.

SARah will feature three satellites and two ground stations to help Germany’s government maintain its reconnaissance functions.
