airport towerThe U.S. Air Force has awarded Thales‘ defense and security business a $14.1 million contract modification to produce an additional three deployable instrument landing systems.

The modification covers deployable glideslopes, localizers and containers for the electrical gear to support the military branch’s risk reduction efforts, the Defense Department said Thursday.

DoD noted the Air Force uses D-ILS to help airmen land aircraft at tactical airfields and airports where a fixed-based instrument landing system has been damaged by natural disasters or humanitarian relief operations.

The service branch will obligate $12.8 million at the time of award from its “other” procurement funds in fiscal 2016.

Thales’ defense and security business will perform work in Clarksburg, Maryland through Jan. 17, 2019.
