John Lainhart, a former leader of the U.S. public sector cybersecurity and privacy group at IBM, has been appointed as senior strategist at Grant Thornton‘s cyber risk advisory practice.

He will oversee the development of cybersecurity offerings for the public sector in his new position, Grant Thornton said Thursday.

“It’s essential for agencies to invest in cyber defense and preparedness, and John’s qualifications will be a tremendous asset as we sharpen our cybersecurity capabilities for clients at all levels of government,” said Carlos Otal, national managing partner of Grant Thornton’s public sector business.

Lainhart previously led 250 security and privacy consultants in support of U.S. government customers at IBM’s global business services unit.

His team worked with the Defense Department, National Security Agency and Social Security Administration.

Lainhart also served as a partner in the public sector, information technology governance, security, privacy and wireless business areas of IBM during his 14-year career there.

He joined the technology firm after he worked in a partner role at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Lainhart also held a 30-year career in the federal government and his prior roles include inspector general at the House of Representatives; assistant inspector general at the Transportation Department; and group director at the Government Accountability Office.
