IBM-Mellanox-Nvidia Team Aims to Complete New DOE Supercomputers in Early 2018 - top government contractors - best government contracting event

A team composed of IBM, Nvidia and Mellanox is scheduled to complete the development of two supercomputing machines at the Energy Department‘s Oak Ridge and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories early next year.

The alliance is working to build ORNL’s Summit and LLNL’s Sierra computers through a $325 million project DOE awarded in late 2014.

Dave Turek, vice president of exascale systems at IBM, wrote in a blog entry posted Monday the supercomputers are designed to increase the performance of applications by six to 10 times compared with the machines’ predecessors.

Summit and Sierra contain IBM’s Power Systems platform, Nvidia’s Volta GPU technologies and NVLink’s interconnect system.

Buddy Bland, project director at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, said the infrastructure for the Summit machine has been completed and that ORNL has begun to deploy IBM’s POWER9 compute nodes.
