Google to Commission Submarine Cables, Open Regions as Part of Infrastructure Expansion - top government contractors - best government contracting eventGoogle will add three new submarine cables and open five new regions as part of its global infrastructure expansion efforts and commitment to serve cloud clients.

Ben Treynor Sloss, vice president of engineering at Google, said in a release published Tuesday the company will open regions in the Netherlands and Montreal within the first quarter of 2018 with Finland, Hong Kong and Los Angeles soon to follow.

Sloss noted the investment will look to improve the speed and reliability of connections for all Google users and help enable the use of machine learning engine, Spanner, BigQuery and other services that run on the company’s network.

Google will also commission the Curie private cable, Havfrue consortium cable and the Hong Kong-Guam Cable system to connect various regions around the world including Chile to Los Angeles, U.S. to Denmark and Ireland as well as communication hubs across Asia.

The company’s network currently has more than 100 points of presence around the world along with 7,500 edge caching nodes designed to provide connectivity for users.
