Tom Longstaff, formerly a program manager and principal cybersecurity strategist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory’s asymmetric operations sector, has returned to Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute as chief technology officer.

He will be responsible for formulating a technical strategy and overseeing an SEI-funded research program based on technology, industry and government trends, the institute said Thursday.

Longstaff previously led APL projects in areas such as nuclear command and control, cyber and information assurance on behalf of the U.S. government.

He also chaired Johns Hopkins University’s computer science, cybersecurity and information system engineering programs, as well as worked as co-chair of data science at the university’s Whiting School.

Before he joined APL, Longstaff served as deputy director for technology for the SEI CERT division and helped establish multiple projects and centers during his 15-year career there.

He worked with federal agencies in efforts to analyze and predict network security or cyber terrorism events using response and vulnerability data.
