Lockheed Martin will open a projected 225,000-square-foot strike systems production facility in Troy, Ala., which will support the company’s existing cruise missile production factory in a push to meet U.S. Air Force weapons goals.

The aerospace and defense contractor said Thursday it aims to complete construction by 2021 to support the potential increase in the production of the extended range variant of the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile in the second half of 2022.

"We're pleased to see Lockheed Martin continue to invest in our community with the addition of this new manufacturing building," said Troy Mayor Jason Reeves. "Their growth not only leads to more jobs – it enhances sustainable growth for our region."

Officials from the Air Force and Alabama state joined Lockheed at the ground breaking of the Troy facility yesterday.
