TYSONS CORNER, VA, August 8, 2019 — Rick Ambrose, executive vice president of Lockheed Martin’s (NYSE: LMT) space division, said in an interview the U.S. Air Force’s future satellite-based missile warning system is designed to have increased flexibility and resiliency, GovCon Wire reported Tuesday.

He told C4ISRNET in an interview posted Monday that the Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared program, a group of three satellites that Lockheed is developing under a $2.93B Air Force contract, will be able to discern threats, process data and update algorithms as needed.

“We can upload patches and software like we do on most satellites. We’ve been doing this for decades. But now it just gives you more flexibility to do even more things,” said Ambrose, a four-time Wash100 winner.

The company will also integrate its SmartSat processing technology into the system to support the payload and enable incremental upgrades, he added.
