The defense and space division of Airbus has invested in Amprius to help further develop the latter company's  lithium-ion battery technology with silicon nanowire anodes.

Airbus said Thursday it aims to increase production capacity and introduce high-energy density cells in the company's aerospace efforts such as the urban air mobility and pseudo-satellite unmanned aircraft system programs.

Jon Bornstein, chief operating officer of Amprius, said the company seeks to provide batteries for Airbus' Zephyr High Altitude Pseudo Satellite platform.

Zephyr is designed to support intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and communications requirements for military, disaster response and commercial operations.

Airbus unveiled the HAPS technology last year at the Farnborough Airshow.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Amprius has been producing Li-ion batteries with 100 percent silicon anode technology since 2013.
