Parsons and nonprofit Fraunhofer USA have partnered to produce a biosensor designed to directly detect the coronavirus that has been causing the COVID-19 disease.

The sensor will use Fraunhofer’s diamond electrode technology and Parsons’ microelectronics expertise and pathogen research to detect biological threats, Parsons said Monday.

The partnership will begin to test and develop a prototype of the biosensor in the summer. Parsons and Fraunhofer plan to eventually commercialize the resulting product.

“As many parts of the world start the process of re-opening, testing capabilities are a critical component of a safe return to work, school and daily living,” said Carey Smith, president and chief operating officer at Parsons and a two-time Wash100 awardee.
