Fairbanks Morse has received a purchase order for four main propulsion systems to power an amphibious transport dock Huntington Ingalls Industries will build for the U.S. Navy as part of a potential $1.5B contract.

HII ordered four FM|Colt-Pielstick PC 2.5 diesel engines for integration into Landing Platform/Dock 31, the second of the military branch's planned 13 Flight II LPD vessels, Fairbanks Morse said Tuesday.

The 16-cylinder motors are designed to have common rail fuel injection technology and produce more than 31 megawatts of propulsion power.

Fairbanks Morse will also help install and test the engines on the LPD 31 vessel at HII's shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss.

The Flight II platform is based on the San Antonio class amphibious ship design and meant to sustain over 500 Marines for a monthlong mission.
