SpiderOak deployed and demonstrated its OrbitSecure software aboard the International Space Station using an Amazon Web Services-built edge computing device provided by Axiom Space.
SpiderOak said Tuesday OrbitSecure was uploaded on July 31 aboard the ISS and demonstrated its capability to receive and transmit secure ops traffic between low-Earth orbit and the ground using AWS Snowcone and the Tracking and Data Relay System.
“The future of space is undeniably software-defined,” said John Moberly, senior vice president for space at SpiderOak.
“Our successful demonstration shows that it’s not just possible, but effective and secure, to run containerized workloads in modern orchestrated environments with secure data channels from orbit to ground and vice versa,” added Moberly.
The software company said the demonstration highlights the potential of containerized government and commercial workloads in space, offers the opportunity to ensure the security of scientific research and other data-intensive operations in space and provides the groundwork for the development of orbital data centers.
