Bae-systems-logo_ExecutiveBiz1BAE Systems has started to evaluate the digital night-vision function of its Striker II helmet-mounted display through a series of nighttime flights being held in the U.K.

The company said Tuesday the night trials work to support its efforts to develop a replacement for analog night-vision goggles that combat pilots currently use.

“[The goggles] … increase g-force pressures on the head and neck, limiting the pilot’s maneuverability in the cockpit,” said Peter Kosogorin, a test pilot at BAE.

Chris Colston, the company’s business development director, added that a second series of tests later this year will focus on Striker II’s plug-and-play compatibility with the Typhoon fighter jet.

BAE Systems also noted that the helmet-mounted display additionally features a target-tracking system that works to position symbology on the visor based on where the pilot looks.
