Raytheon has awarded SES Government Solutions a subcontract to develop two stations for the GEO Uplink Subsystem in support of the ground and space operations of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Wide Area Augmentation System.
WAAS is a navigation tool that works to detect errors in position estimates through the monitoring of GPS signals across the National Airspace System and designed to guide aircraft during take-off, landing and en route navigation.
SES GS said Thursday it will set up the uplink stations on current teleport facilities in California and Washington to transmit data and improve the availability and accuracy of GPS signals during flights.
“SES GS is proud to expand our partnership with Raytheon and the FAA beyond the SES-15 hosted payload to include development, delivery and operations of the ground uplink stations,†said Tim Deaver, corporate vice president of development at SES Government Solutions.
The company was awarded contract in April to equip the SES-15 satellite with a WAAS hosted payload and SES GS expects to launch that satellite in 2017.
