Humvee1The U.S. Army plans to give General DynamicsWarfighter Information Network-Tactical system an on-the-move function as the company works to reconfigure WIN-T for the Humvee, Defense News reported Wednesday.

Jen Judson writes the Army wants to develop a smaller version of the system, which currently fits on larger platforms and supports connectivity to the tactical network only when the vehicle is at a halt.

Lt. Col. LaMont Hall, WIN-T product manager, told Defense News early-entry forces prefer a version that is “smaller, lighter and more easily deployed.”

Judson reports the Army aims to have WIN-T facilitate both line-of-sight and satellite networking and communications functions while forces are either at a halt or on the move.

The service will test the smaller WIN-T on a Humvee by May 2017 and field the system’s new Tactical Communications Node Lite and Network Operations and Security Center Lite capabilities, Judson reports.
