tablet, soldier, c4isrThe U.S. Army has started to implement an updated Warfighter Information Network-Tactical system built by General Dynamics in an effort to increase speed and security of voice, data and video communications among deployed troops.

WIN-T Increment 1 modernization involved the consolidation of new and existing tactical communications hardware into virtualized servers to address size, weight and power issues, the Army said Tuesday.

“Since the tactical network upgrades expand server and storage capability, they also support future network operations convergence mission requirements, the Army’s common operating environment, and software convergence initiatives,” said Lt. Col. Mark Henderson, WIN-T Increment 1 product manager at the Army.

General Dynamics designed the network to help U.S. soldiers transmit and secure communications “at the halt” even in the absence of fixed infrastructure.

The system also works as the backbone for the Army’s other networked communication platforms and mission command applications, the military branch noted.
