explosive-disposalA subsidiary of Chemring Sensors and Electronic Systems has landed an estimated $10 million contract for the sale of buried threat detection devices from a country in the Persian Gulf region.

NIITEK will deliver its Groundshark dual-sensor handheld system that works to detect buried objects and threats including mines and improvised explosive devices, the company said Monday.

NIITEK President Tom Thebes said the threat detection technology works to support efforts to address the ongoing threat of IEDs in allied countries.

Groundshark was derived from the Husky Mounted Detection System — which NIITEK said the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps use — and works to visualize subsurface objects for soldiers and explosive ordnance disposal teams.

It combines ground-penetrating radar technology and Minelab Electronics‘ metal detector tool, NIITEK said.

The company added that delivery of the handheld units would proceed through August 2016.
