cloud computingNASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will move to a private cloud computing infrastructure built by Red Hat in an effort to modernize and secure JPL’s on-premise storage and server system.

The space agency selected Red Hat’s OpenStack and Linux technology to update JPL’s storage service for large computing requirements of scientists and engineers at NASA’s main center for robotic exploration of the solar syste,, Red Hat said Monday.

Red Hat aims to help NASA researchers access their own private cloud and use external services such as Amazon Web Services during peak demand, according to Red Hat.

“NASA JPL is at the forefront of technology-powered innovation and we’re excited about the computing capacity needed for their exploratory missions being powered by Red Hat OpenStack platform,” said Radhesh Balakrishnan, general manager of OpenStack at Red Hat.

JPL and Red Hat engineers built the on-site OpenStack cloud to address growing agency-wide demand for resources to process requests from flight projects and researchers that work on mission data.
