Global-XpressKai Tang, vice president of the U.S. government business unit at Inmarsat, has told MilsatMagazine that first responders and nongovernmental organizations need to quickly mobilize during humanitarian relief missions and disasters through the use of satellite communications services.

Tang said in an interview published in the magazine’s April 2016 edition that Inmarsat seeks to address that need through its mobile satcom services and equipment, including Global Xpress that works to provide Ka-band connectivity, Global Satellite Phone Service and Broadband Global Area Network terminals.

Tang, former director for tactical and assured communications for the company’s Global Xpress program, cited the need of NGOs and first responders for satcom tools designed to achieve connectivity without the need for technical training when it comes to installation.

He also mentioned how first responders used Inmarsat-built equipment to carry out their mission in the absence of cell phone coverage in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.
