Bae-systems-logo_ExecutiveBiz1BAE Systems has been chosen by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop an undersea navigation technology for the U.S. Navy under the Positioning System for Deep Ocean Navigation program.

The goal of the program is to enable undersea vehicles to navigate underwater without having to periodically go above surface to access the space-based global positioning system, BAE said Monday.

Joshua Niedzwiecki, BAE sensor processing and exploitation director, said the company seeks to support underwater navigation by demonstrating acoustic underwater GPS sources and receivers for the POSYDON program.

The defense company stated that it will lead a team to develop POSYDON’s positioning, navigation and timing system designed to use integrated long-ranged acoustic sources placed at a number of fixed locations under the ocean, as well as a vehicle instrumentation system to process the acoustic signals.

The team includes the University of Washington, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Texas in Austin.
